Our Mind and Control
The beautiful thing about Stoic philosophy is the advice contained within it is just as applicable today as it was when it was first written all those many years ago. We can learn a great deal from interpreting the advice provided and using it to our advantage as we go throughout our own lives.
Today’s quote comes to us courtesy of Marcus Aurelius, Meditations:
Quote
“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Advice
You have control over your thoughts and the actions that flow from those thoughts. Stoicism was a philosophy built around the restructuring of our thoughts, changing our perspectives, and applying these new understandings to our actions. It was built around wisdom and reason. Here, Marcus is referencing Epictetus’s words about the Dichotomy of Control, which separates what is and is not within our control. Once one understands the truth of what is and is not within their control, they will find their lives more at peace.
