No Wailing
The beautiful thing about Stoic philosophy is the advice contained within it is just as applicable today as it was when it was first written all those many years ago. We can learn a great deal from interpreting the advice provided and using it to our advantage as we go throughout our own lives.
Today’s quote comes to us courtesy of Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, VII.43:
Quote
No joining others in their wailing, no violent emotion.
Advice
Do not allow others to dictate your actions or emotions. You are your own individual self and thus must isolate your actions and emotions from those who begin to act in a non-virtuous manner. It is easy to be swept up in others actions, to speak gossip with co-workers or degrade others when everyone around you is. But this is not virtuous, and allows others to dictate our actions and emotions. Follow your own emotions and actions.
